Because EcoFusion is a living system, the end result is not achieved by installation alone. It is achieved by correct system design, careful commissioning, and a short settling-in period where the biology establishes and the operating settings are fine-tuned to your specific pool. 

How EcoFusion replaces a traditional wetland

The EcoFusion system concentrates the work of a large gravel-and-plant wetland into a compact, engineered filtration zone. Instead of relying on vast areas of submerged gravel, EcoFusion uses a highly oxygenated bioreactor filled with specialised media that provides an exceptionally high surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. This creates an efficient biological environment where nutrients are naturally broken down, without the need for a large planted wetland.

In practical terms, this means the entire EcoFusion footprint for a typical 37,000-litre pool is approximately 2 metres by 0.6 metres. For larger pools, the system scales accordingly. Pools in the 75,000 to 100,000-litre range generally require roughly double this space.

Because EcoFusion is a modular system, the pump and filtration components can usually be installed wherever it is most practical. In new builds, the system can be located almost anywhere, including under a deck or up to 30 metres away from the pool.

This flexibility allows natural pools to be created without sacrificing garden space, while still delivering stable water quality through a fully engineered biological process.

The EcoFusion difference: engineered clarity with living biology

At the heart of EcoFusion is the bio-filter: a high-oxygen treatment environment designed to support a large population of beneficial microorganisms on specialised media. This is where much of the work happens. The right microbial community naturally establishes itself and continuously processes dissolved waste compounds, creating a stable foundation for clear, healthy water.

Why oxygen matters

Healthy natural water depends on oxygen. In traditional gravel wetlands, oxygen levels vary throughout the filter, often dropping deep within the gravel where organic material slowly accumulates. Over time, this can create stagnant zones that reduce filtration efficiency and require major maintenance to correct.

EcoFusion takes a different approach.

By actively injecting oxygen into the bioreactor, the system creates a consistently aerobic environment where beneficial bacteria thrive. These bacteria naturally convert dissolved nutrients into harmless by-products, helping to keep the water clear and balanced.

High oxygen levels also prevent the formation of anaerobic pockets, reduce odours, and support long-term system stability. The result is faster biological processing, more predictable performance, and a filtration system that remains effective year after year.

Treatment Stages

1. Bioreactor
Water is taken from the weir and sent into a highly oxygenated bioreactor, where beneficial bacteria naturally clean the water.

2. Mechanical filtration
Next, the water is filtered through a fine filtration media to remove fine particles and debris down to 10 micron.

3. Nutrient removal
A specialised media then removes excess nutrients that would otherwise feed algae.

4. UV treatment
The water passes through UV to reduce microbial load and enhance clarity.

5. Mineral conditioning
The water then passes through a mineral ionization stage, where naturally occurring trace minerals help support water clarity and ongoing conditioning.

The treated water is then returned to the pool.

6. EcoFusion Smart Control 

Behind every EcoFusion system is an intelligent control hub that manages how water moves through each stage of treatment. Natural water purification depends not only on filters and biology, but on precise control of flow rates, timing, and circulation. The EcoFusion Control Hub coordinates all of this automatically.

It regulates:

  • pump speeds and flow rates

  • how long water spends in each treatment stage

  • bypasses for high-flow circulation events

  • scheduled low-flow periods that support biological filtration

  • higher-flow intervals that refresh the pool hydraulics and surface skimming

This dynamic approach allows the system to balance two important needs: slow, oxygen-rich flow for effective biofiltration, and faster circulation periods to keep the pool evenly mixed and visually clear. Rather than running at a single constant speed all day, EcoFusion operates in programmed cycles, adjusting flow throughout the day to support both water quality and energy efficiency.

All of this happens automatically in the background, giving you the benefits of an actively managed water system without any daily input.

Does it get Algae?

A natural pool is not a chlorine pool. The water is alive, and that is the point. While clarity is excellent, it’s normal (and healthy) to see a very thin biofilm on the pool surfaces.

To make expectations clear, we share this reference picture here, so you can see what excellent looks like in a properly functioning natural system. The pool shown is manually vacuumed once a week and the walls are brushed. These photos were taken six days after that routine maintenance. We are completely transparent about this because we want your expectations to match what we deliver. If your goal is a turquoise-blue pool where nothing biological ever develops on any surface, then EcoFusion is not the right solution, and a conventional chlorine pool is the only system that reliably produces that aesthetic.


Note: This reference photo is taken in a pool with a medium-grey interior finish. Surface colour matters. The darker the finish, the less visible a thin biofilm layer tends to be. White or very light finishes reflect more light and can make that same healthy film read as more β€œemerald” on the walls even when the water itself remains crystal clear. 

Power Usage Comparison
The only trade-off is a slightly higher energy consumption. A typical EcoFusionβ„’ System operates at approximately 6.7 kWh per day, costing around R15 dailyβ€”comparable to a conventional swimming pool. However, this energy supports the operation of a glass filter, automatic pool cleaner, and the delivery of exceptional water quality and stability.

By contrast, gravel wetland systems, while often low-energy, lack the mechanical filtration needed to clean water and the pool floor effectively. Manual cleaning with a pond vacuum or similar tools becomes necessary, adding time and effort. Where the context and client design requirements are better suited to gravel wetlands we often develop hybrid systems. So we still love and value the gravel wetland where it is better suited.
